New Arrival: Brasil Fazenda Esperança

The sleepy Brazilian town of Campos Altos with it’s 14.000 inhabitants is home sweet home for the Souza family. Patriarch Joao ”Zinho” Souza and his family produced this fantastic micro-lot at their farm: Fazenda Esperança.

The small area within the farm where these Yellow Icatu variety coffee trees grow have shown year after year to have a unique flavor profile. With a distinctly juicy yet gentle acidity, this coffee is a classic with a twist.

Fazenda Esperança is located within Brasil’s Cerrado Mineiro region. The Cerrado has well-defined seasons - a hot summer with regular rains and cooler and extremely dry winter – unusual weather for most coffee growing regions. This particular weather profile is perfect for producing sun-dried coffees by natural or pulped natural methods. In the pulped natural process the coffee fruit skin is removed yet the mucilage, or coffee fruit around the beans is mostly kept. After that the coffee is dried on a large patio under the intense Cerrado sun; developing it’s natural sweetness and syrupy body. It is with generations of skill that Zinho and his son Bruno rotate the coffee around the patio, with the rays of the sun, producing a brilliantly clean cup.

Since his return from his assignment in Italy during World War II, Joao Sidney (or “Zinho,” the diminutive he is known by) has been producing and trading his unique gems on the land he purchased in 1946, with the dream of producing coffee.

New Arrival: Peru Balcones

BALCONES PRODUCER GROUP

Balcones, San Francisco and Nueva Esperanza comunities

Chirinos, San Ignacio - Peru

Balcones is a special group of 48 growers within Peruʼs Chirinos Cooperative that formed in 2001 to differentiate their distinct high- quality coffee. The growers live in the Balcones, San Francisco, and Nueva Esperanza communities in northwestern Peru, in the Cajamarca region that shares a border with Ecuador. Balcones coffee is grown in a microclimate that is breezy and misty in the mornings. The temperature ranges from 23-28° C. The altitude is between 1600 and 1800 meters.

The coffee cherries are harvested into baskets hand-made by the Balcones producers themselves. Later it is de-pulped, fermented, and dried by the farmers, and transported to Chirinosʼ warehouse with a humidity level of 12-13%. There, the Chirinos Coopertive analyzes the beans and separates those of the highest quality into a micro lot, which is taken to the dry mill separately for maximum traceability.

The 48 Balcones producers have adopted a unified processing method. As a  tight knit group, the producers have worked together to find optimum fermentation, and have refined their harvesting and drying methods so they consistently achieve a quality cup. Their dedication to         consistent processing, combined with the qualities imparted by the regionʼs unique microclimate, gives the Balcones coffee its specific characteristics. The varieties in this micro-lot are Typica, Pache, Caturra and Bourbon. 

Premiums paid on the coffee fund projects in the communities, such as solar panels, bathrooms, and better fermentation tanks. The producers use the Pachakushi organic fertilizer produced by Chirinos on their farms, and take advantage of the technical agronomy assistance provided by the co-op. Every one of the 48 farmers has graduated from a basic cupping course hosted by Chirinos.

A delicate coffee, with floral aromas and notes of molasses, malt, and fresh currant and pomegranate. It is well structured with a pronounced acidity and balanced body.

New Arrival: Colombia Finca El Ventilador

Jose Edgar Pareja

El Higuerón Huila - Colombia


Jose Edgar Pareja produces this prized coffee in the high mountains outside of Pitalito near the small village of El Higuerón in the department of Huila. Although the majority of the producers in his area tend to sell their coffee through the cooperative model, Jose prefers to ‘fly solo’ and cultivate and process his coffee independently to achieve his desired quality. The proof is in the cup with this very special micro-lot from Colombia.

Varieties:

Red and yellow Caturra: 47,000 trees (of which 15,000 are currently pruned)

Colombia: 3,000 trees

Processing: Naturally fermented for 14 hours and fully washed. Sun dried in parabolic covered patios

Annual Production: 100 bags (70-kg, green)
