This dynamic coffee comes to us from the village of Rugali in southwestern Rwanda. Over 400 smallholder farmers growing red Bourbon coffee pick and deliver coffee cherries to the Cyesha washing station. Cyesha is a newly constructed and fully modern washing station run by brothers Karthick and Gaudam and their coffee processing and exporting company, Muraho. At the washing station the coffee cherries are processed in the washed method traditional to Rwanda and dried on raised beds. Cyesha, as well as it’s sister Muraho washing stations have recently begun producing natural and honey processed coffees as well. Cyesha aims to create mutually beneficial relationships between itself and the coffee farmers who grow the coffee. They provide fertilizer and over 50,000 coffee seedlings to the community each year and because all picking, processing and sorting is done by hand, Cyesha is designed to create jobs in it’s community.
Located on the shore of Rwanda’s biggest lake, Lake Kivu, the Cyesha washing station benefits from nearly constant gentle breezes which help dry coffee uniformly after washing. The rich volcanic soil, heirloom coffee cultivar and high elevation- with some farmers growing coffee up to 2100 M.A.S.L.- contribute to this coffee’s juicy, sweet and vibrant qualities. We enjoy the bright and lively fruit flavors and somewhat wild nature of this coffee.
